For my second
day in Holland, Eron suggested we take a walk around Delft in the morning
and then visit Rotterdam before heading to Munich for Oktoberfest.
| |

01) DELFT | This
is the "new" cathedral in Delft. If I remember correctly,
it's around 800 years old. I climbed to the top of the tower to take
the next few shots. |
|

02) DELFT | I
must be in Holland.

03) DELFT | Eron's
flat is visible in this shot. If you look closely, you can see a woman
with a bike between the two traffic lanes. Eron's flat is immediately
to the left of her (she has her back to it).

04) DELFT | A
mix of townhouses: historic in the foreground, contemporary behind them.

05) DELFT | A
modern row of townhomes.

06) DELFT | Another
modern example.

07) DELFT | Delft
has canals too. Note the lack of automotive guardrails ... and Smartcars!

08) ROTTERDAM | The
Cafe De Unie, by J.P.P. Oud - the first building of my study
that I encountered.

09) ROTTERDAM | A
large square in Rotterdam a short distance from De Unie. Those red arms
move about every 15 minutes. You can see that they are all at different
positions. The knob at the end of each is a light fixture.

10) ROTTERDAM | This
brick building is the Cafe Dudok - named after the famous Dutch architect.
It was one of only a few buildings that survived the bombings of WWII.
Nearly everything else in Rotterdam was destroyed - including the Cafe
De Unie (the one now standing is a reconstruction).

11) ROTTERDAM | We
decided to have lunch at the Dudok. Eron's father is attempting to read
a Dutch newspaper.

12) ROTTERDAM | Contemplating
the "cube houses" of Rotterdam. The courtyard was being resurfaced
when we were there.

13) ROTTERDAM | You
can tour one of the units. They are 4 stories each (consisting of roughly:
storage, living, bedroom, & loft). This picture shows the loft. The
girl is about 4 years old and about 3 feet short. The room is not really
very big. My overall impression of these homes was that they weren't very
practical for everyday living - not enough headroom or storage room (shelves
anyone?). They would, however, make the most amazing college dorms!

14) ROTTERDAM | Hell
of a bridge. It looks like a Callitrava design, but I don't know
for certain if it is.
| |

15) ROTTERDAM | Another
Renzo Piano building. |
|

16) ROTTERDAM | Heading
towards Germany (and another cool bridge).
