I was able
to check out of the Casa Celeste, yet keep my pack there while I visited
a few neighboring towns. I returned late in the day to retrieve it before
catching a bus to Salerno and then on to Sicily.

01) AMALFI | Amalfi
is the largest town on the Amalfi Coast. It's also the most touristy.
Positano is much more picturesque and charming. This is the main square.
It doubles as a parking lot and bus depot. I caught a bus from here that
took me to the smaller neighboring village of Ravello. Ravello is located
on a ridge high above the other beach towns. Within it, sited on the highest
spot, is the Villa Cimbrone.

02) RAVELLO: VILLA CIMBRONE | Villa
Cimbrone is famous as the refuge of Greta Garbo. A plaque on the wall
has a dedication to her.

03) RAVELLO: VILLA CIMBRONE | The
Villa is now a 5-star hotel (around $500 a night). Unless you are staying
there, you are not allowed inside the building. However, for a small fee
(8,000 Lira) you can wander the gardens. This is the main path through
the garden.
| |

04) RAVELLO: VILLA CIMBRONE | A
pavillion sheltering a statue terminates the path. |
|

05) RAVELLO: VILLA CIMBRONE | Through
the pavillion: the Belvedere of Infinity. You'll notice Infinity is hazy.
Everywhere I went along the Mediterrainean I encountered an unfortunate
haze along the horizon. If the skies were non-polluted, you could easily
see the city of Salerno less than 20 miles away. With binoculors, you
might even be able to see Paestum.

06) RAVELLO: VILLA CIMBRONE | As
it was (and probably still is), you can only see the immediate neighboring
towns and hills.

07) RAVELLO: VILLA CIMBRONE | It's
still a nice place to sit though.

08) RAVELLO: VILLA CIMBRONE | Looking
down.

09) RAVELLO: VILLA CIMBRONE | A
flower garden near the Villa.
| |

10) RAVELLO: VILLA CIMBRONE | Leaving
the garden to catch the bus back to Amalfi, I was shocked to encounter
this statue: Donatello's David. As my esteemed collegue and friend,
George Signori, was quick to point out, "That's not the real
one, Mitchell!" Well no shit.
