Today I borrowed
Eron's rented car (I can't recall now what kind it was - some sort of
Renault, I think) and went on my own to the town of Füssen, which
lies on the southern border of Germany.

01) FÜSSEN | The
goal for this day was to visit Neu Schwanstein castle. After making a
few wrong turns (which set me back about 45 minutes) I finally arrived.
You can just barely make out the castle at the far right of this photo,
just above the field.

02) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | There
is a waterfall that flows out of the hills just beyond the castle. I'm
standing on the bridge that spans it in order to take this shot.

03) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | Coming
up behind the castle. Note the paraglider off to the left.
| |

04) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | Fortunately
I had a wide angle lens. As I recall, the tours discharge out of the
door you see here. |
|
| |

05) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | At
the gatehouse. You don't need to by a ticket (10 dm) to get to this
point, or even beyond it. You only have to purchase one if you want
to go inside the castle itself. |
|

06) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | Looking
back from the gatehouse.

07) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | Just
inside the gatehouse is a two level courtyard. This is the lower level.
The four poles in the center of the photo mark the ques for the tours.
Tours leave every 20 minutes or so - your ticket has a time on it. I actually
missed my group 'cos I was busy exploring the upper courtyard and lost
track of time. Which turned out for the best, as I was first in line for
the next group.
| |

08) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | I
took this shot from the upper courtyard looking back towards the gatehouse. |
|
| |

09) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | Same
spot as #8, but turned 180 degrees. The white stones in the paving
mark the spot where the keep was to have been built. Mad King Ludwig
II died before the castle was finished. And so the keep was never
built. |
|
| |

10) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | Looking
out from within. They don't allow photos inside, but they do allow
you to shoot out the window. This is looking back towards the gatehouse.
The upper courtyard w/foundation stones is in the center. A glass
partition prevents you from walking very far into the upper courtyard. |
|
| |

11) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | Again,
shooting out a window. This time looking toward the waterfall and
the bridge. |
|

12) NEU SCHWANSTEIN | The
view from the throne room. Hohenschwangau castle (Ludwig's boyhood "home")
is the yellow castle in the center. The tourist village is below it. The
alps in the background are in Austria.
12)
NEU SCHWANSTEIN | I
would have loved to hike up further into the hills to get this postcard
shot of the front of the castle with the lake in the background, but I
simply ran out of time. I left around 4pm and found the autobahn for the
trip back. Managed a respectable 160kph - a record which I goaded Eron
into breaking the next day. When I arrived back in the 'States, I was
disappointed to discover that I had only been doing around 100mph. It
seemed faster at the time...
