I awoke to sunshine. Needless to say, I was happy that I decided to stick to my schedule and leave Rome for later. Today I took the train to Riomaggiore and spent the day hiking the goat paths back to Monterosso.

01) RIOMAGGIORE |
Looking out towards the Mediterrainean. I took the next couple of shots from the fort in the upper right-hand corner of this photo.

02) RIOMAGGIORE |
The houses and shops fill the ravine...

03) RIOMAGGIORE |
...and seem to tumble right into the sea.

04) THE VIA DELL'AMORE |
The path from Riomaggiore to Manarola is paved with stones.

05) MANAROLA |
In all five villages, most of the buildings are only a few stories high with balconies that hang over the street. Since cars can't get to the lower parts of the towns, the street is available for boat parking.

06) MANAROLA |
Picturesque.

07) MANAROLA |
Looking back toward the harbor.

08) MANAROLA |
Just beyond the point where photo #07 was taken. I took this distant view of Corniglia.

09) CORNIGLIA |
Looking south, back towards Manarola.

10) CORNIGLIA |
Corniglia is the only village of the five that isn't built around a harbor. Instead, it is sited on a high ridge and actually is accessible by road (auto).

11) CORNIGLIA |
The other half of town.

12) CORNIGLIA |
Overview.

13) ON THE GOAT PATHS |
Distant view of Corniglia with an even more distant view of Manarola.

14) ON THE GOAT PATHS |
Next stop: Vernazza. Look closely for the sailboat.

15) VERNAZZA |
Vernazza is the most popular and perhaps the most picturesque of the five villages (although, Manarola is a close second in my opinion).

16) VERNAZZA |
All the villages at one point had fortifications that protected them from invasion by sea back in the day.

17) VERNAZZA |
Looking back towards the town from the harbor jetty.

18) VERNAZZA |
The main street.

19) VERNAZZA |
You can get to the villages by goat path, by train, or by ferry. One is making a stop.

20) VERNAZZA |
Overview.

21) VERNAZZA | I wanna take you higher!

22) MONTEROSSO |
Only a few ridges to go! I ended up back in Monterosso around 4 pm. The entire hike is around 7 miles - though with all the ups and downs, it seems more like double that. I soothed my feet with a walk through the Mediterranean before heading back to my hotel room to drop off the camera. One of the best dinners I had during my trip, I had here - Penne Salmon. Mmmmm, delicious!
