The first
thing I did was get the hell out of Naples. I spent the morning in the
neighboring city of Pozzouli.

01) POZZOULI | The
town is right smack in the center of a volcanic caldera (the Phlegraean
Fields). Nice town planning guys! In fact, there are several craters in
the area that are geothermically active. I visited one called Sulfatera
Crater. As you can see, it was a steamy, smelly (sulferous) affair.

02) POZZOULI | Looking
back. The fence keeps people out of the unstable areas. The sign warns
people not to climb over fence.

03) POZZOULI | Also
in the town, are the remains of two Roman amphitheatres. The train actually,
goes right through the older one, but the larger "newer" structure
is preserved as an archaeological site.

04) POZZOULI | Unlike
the one in Rome, your ticket serves as an all access pass here.

05) POZZOULI | The
subterranean passageways are full of broken columns and capitols - many
of which have fallen over due to all the vulcanism in the area.

06) POZZOULI | Despite
all the volcanic activity, the brickwork is still remarkably straight.

07) POZZOULI | Ah!
So there's the flash!
| |

08) POZZOULI | The
trap doors in the ceiling were used to put the occassional "vicious
beast" into the arena with the gladiators. This one had more
openings than any other amphitheatre I saw. |
|
I spent the
second half of the day attempting to find Roman ruins in the town of Santa
Maria Capua Vetere, just north (one train stop) of Caserta. I searched
and searched, not really knowing where I was going. I got frustrated and
went back to Caserta, thinking I would spend the remains of the day in
the gardens. But the Palazzo Reale is closed on Mondays.
Back at the
train station I waited for the next train to Naples, when I spotted a
regional map on the wall. I located Capua and to my surprise, found the
ruins noted on it. I jumped on the next train back to Capua and after
a 15 minute walk, found the ruins.

09) SANTA MARIA CAPUA VETERE | Arch
of Hadrian. The Via Appia once passed under it.

10) SANTA MARIA CAPUA VETERE | What's
left of the Amphitheatre. Depending on what you read, this one or the
one in Pozzouli is the 2nd largest known.

11) SANTA MARIA CAPUA VETERE | The
site was actually closed by the time I got there, but I was able to shoot
a few photos from a distance.
