After a few
days in Tozeur, the weather was still overcast and windy. Thinking I'd
wait for better weather in order to photograph the movie locations, I
went on a drive to the mountain oasis towns of Chebika, Tamerza, and Mides.

01) NEAR CHEBIKA | The
little patch of green just below the horizon is Tamerza.

02) NEAR TAMERZA | The
water was full of little frogs.

03) MIDES | I
had read internet rumours that the next STAR WARS film was scheduled to
shoot in these oasis towns. I knew that Mides had this ravine which seemed
to me to be a good location. I didn't see any evidence that a film crew
had been here, though time will tell. [update 2006: This canyon didn't
feature in either of the remaining two prequels. It is rumoured to have
been shot as background for the pod race sequence from the first prequel.
However, I've read nothing which would confirm this officially.]

04) MIDES | The
ravine walls are fairly high, but the floor is no wider than your average
road.

05) MIDES | Despite
the presence of horse & camel tracks, I was completely alone in the
little canyon.

06) MIDES | It
certainly looks like a STAR WARS film could have been shot here.

07) TOZEUR | The
sun finally came out. This is the Hotel Dar Chraïet in Tozeur.

08) TOZEUR | Another
hotel. The hotel I stayed in was not located in the "Zone Touristique"
on the west side of town. Mine was located on the eastern edge of the
town. It was a nice enough place - inexpensive and clean - although one
morning I woke up covered in little ants!

09) TOZEUR | I
thought this might be a hotel (it's located at the end of the Zone Touristique),
however all the Tunisian flags make me think it might have been a goverment
office.
