This was
my last full day in Rome. I spent it leisurely visiting a few places I
missed in the previous two days as well as some I hadn't.

01) ROME: PALAZZO FARENESE | Now
the French Embassy. The façade was designed by Michelangelo. The
sides are covered in a black soot.
| |

02) ROME: PIAZZA NAVONNA | Yet
another obelisk "donated" by the Egyptians. My, they were
a generous bunch! |
|

03) ROME: PIAZZA NAVONNA | The
Fountain of the Four Rivers (Nile, Ganges, Danube, & Rio Plata) by
Bernini. It's long been said that his figures are shielding their eyes
in disgust from Boromini's façade of Chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone
(beyond). Apparently, the two men hated each other.

04) ROME: PIAZZA NAVONNA | Fontana
del Nettuno by Giacomo Della Porta.
| |

05) ROME: PIAZZA NAVONNA | "I
am the dwead piwate, Woberts!" |
|

06) ROME: THE PANTHEON | McDonald's
is behind me. Note the obelisk, again "donated"...

07) ROME: THE PANTHEON | One
of the few places where the admission is free.
| |

08) ROME: THE PANTHEON | This
is the best preserved building of ancient Rome. It was built in 27
AD by Agripa and then rebuilt in 120 AD by Emperor Hadrian. The artist
Raphael is entombed in one of the niches. |
|

09) ROME: BARBARINI FOUNTAIN | Unfortunately,
it was never on while I was there.

10) ROME: THE TREVI FOUNTAIN | There
are around 300 people behind me in this photo - you can see a few of them
at the lower right. I knew this was an incredibly popular spot, so I got
up early to take photos of it. Upon arriving, I found that the square
was empty except for a few people, but the light was bad, so I put my
cameras away. One of the people there was a little fat man who was pacing
back and forth along the edge of the fountain. I soon noticed that he
was pulling something through the water. When he reached one end of the
fountain, he reeled in his line and pulled out a metal disc. I watched
as he scraped the coins off of it into a bag and thought to myself, "Oh,
he's cleaing the fountain." About this time I heard a whistle and
turned to see another guy behind me shouting towards his rotund friend.
"Fat boy" hollered back, grabbed up his bag, and shuffled off
into an alley. Moments later, four policemen entered the square. I continued
to watch as "biggie" re-entered the square (sans bag), wandered
up to the cops, and started to chat. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed
his accomplice skulking off with a backpack...and a slight hunch as he
supported it's weight!

11) ROME: THE FORUM | Another
view of the Arch of Septimus Severus.

12) ROME: THE FORUM | Looking
up the forum. The Palatine Hill rises off to the right.

13) ROME: THE CAMPIDOLIGO | Piazza
and building façades by Michaelangelo. Eddy Vedder of Pearl Jam
was married here a few years back. He's since divorced.

14) ROME | Foreground:
Trajan's Column. Background: Mussonllini's Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele
II - known locally as the "macchina da scrivere" or "typewriter."
It is not at all loved or even liked by the natives.

15) ROME: PALATINE HILL | The
Palatine Hill was the domain of the emperors of the ancient Roman empire.
You are looking at what was once their private stadium.

16) ROME: PALATINE HILL | "Meow."

17) ROME: PALATINE HILL | The
ancient baths.

18) ROME: PALATINE HILL | An
emeror's toe.

19) ROME: PALATINE HILL | Overlooking
the forum.

20) ROME: THE PANTHEON | Open
'til 6:30pm.

21) ROME: THE PANTHEON | Would you believe
this is a multi-second hand-held exposure without a flash? So was the
one above. I'm still amazed.

22) ROME: THE TREVI FOUNTAIN | Possibly the
most beautiful fountain in the world.
