On my second
day in Kairouan, I got in the car and took a day-trip to see a few more
Roman towns.

01) MACTARIS | The
remnants of Mactaris are located at the edge of the current Tunisian town
of Makthar. This is (was) the amphitheatre.

02) MACTARIS | The
town was founded by Carthaginians around the 5th Century BC, though most
of the ruins date to the 2nd Century AD.
| |

03) MACTARIS | The
baths have been restored and you can get a sense of their former grandeur
by the large columns and mosaic floor. |
|

04) MACTARIS | The
forum is just beyond the Arch of Trajan. During my visit, there were about
100 school kids on a field trip. I managed to avoid them by being in one
part of the ruins while they were in another. We caught up to each other
in the forum. They were very excited to meet me.

05) MACTARIS | Somewhere
in the middle of this writhing mess is a skinny little white boy who appears
to be very much out of his element, but isn't really. One of the girls
took the picture. I have several other blurry shots!

06) SUFETULA | Sufetula
is further south - located just outside the modern town of Sbeitla. This
is the Arch of Diocletian.

07) SUFETULA | The
theatre has been heavily restored. I found the amphitheatre as well, but
it was barely recognisable - just a slight, eroded crater.

08) SUFETULA | The
forum. From left: the temples of Minerva, Jupiter, and Juno.

09) SUFETULA | A
bathing pool. The mosaics are restorations. The originals are in museums
such as the Bardo in Tunis. The greatest number of ancient Roman mosaics
have been discovered in Tunisia.

10) SUFETULA| Another
restored pool.
