After
visiting Ksar Hadada, I went to Foum Tataouine - the namesake of Skywalker's
home planet of Tatooine. After finding a hotel, I went out looking for
postcards. At one shop a local guy a few years younger
than me insisted that I follow him to a house. I was leary, but as most
of my valubles were safely back in my room, I went along. As it turned
out, he just wanted to introduce me to a friend of his who spoke English.
I ended up spending most of the evening with the two of them. They showed
me around the town and I showed them my binder of stills ("C'est
magnifique!"). The next day, the first guy and I went on a drive
through the surrounding area to visit a few Ksour and Berber villages.
At the last Berber village (Chenini) we met up with his friend, who worked
as a guide as well.

01) FOUM TATAOUINE | The
view from my hotel room.

02) KSAR OULED SOLTANE | This
was (and still is) a rumoured location for the STAR WARS prequels. However,
I have yet to find any proof that any filming actually took place here.

03) KSAR OULED SOLTANE | This
shot was taken from the top of the stairway in the upper left of photo
02.

04) KSAR OULED SOLTANE | One
Ksar is very like another...

05) DOUIRAT |
After visited a few Ksour, we went to see a few Berber villages. Douirat
was one.

06) DOUIRAT| The
view from the mosque.

07) DOUIRAT | Nice
spot for tea.

08) CHENINI | Another
Berber village. The ruined Ksar is at the crest of the hill. The dark
streaks that stain the hill are the byproducts of olive presses located
in "caves" within the hillside.

09) CHENINI | Looking
down over the village.

10) FOUM TATAOUINE | One
last look.
After lunch
I left Tataouine for the subterranean Berber village of Matmata. After
a long, slow, dusty drive through the Matmata hills I finally arrived.
Centuries ago, the villagers dug down into the soft tufa partly to escape
the heat and partly to escape their enemies. The result was a subterranean
village (though in the last century, modern buildings have been built
above ground here as well).

11) MATMATA: THE HOTEL SIDI DRISS | The
door to my room is up the stairs and all the way to the left.

12) MATMATA: THE HOTEL SIDI DRISS | My
room: two cots and a bulb.

13) MATMATA: THE HOTEL SIDI DRISS | The
hotel is actually five pit dwellings that have been combined. Three of
the pits hold rooms for guests and one pit is storage. The final, largest
pit (pictured above and below) holds the bar, kitchen, and dining rooms.

14) MATMATA: THE HOTEL SIDI DRISS | The
bar is located just inside the lit alcove in the center of this photo.

15) MATMATA: THE HOTEL SIDI DRISS | The
figures at the right are standing between the doors to the kitchen and
main dining rooms.
