The overnight
train from Vienna arrived in Venice at 8:15am. I spent the next hour or
so walking around in the rain until I found a hotel. They didn't have
a room ready, but let me leave my stuff in the lobby (after assuring me
it would be secure). I was told a room would be ready around 2pm. I spent
the next 6 hours trying to keep dry as it rained and rained and rained.
And then rained some more.
|
01) VENICE | What
you can't see is the rain. By the end of the day, the water was over
the edge. |
|
02) VENICE | The
Ponte di Rialto brigde over the Grand Canal. It's still raining.
03) VENICE | Piazzetta
di San Marco.
04) VENICE | The
first time I entered the square, I was taking photos when suddenly this
huge cruise ship glidded past - temporarily eclipsing everything.
05) VENICE | Looking
back 180 degrees toward the Basilica di San Marco. You'll notice it's
still raining. The stumpy tables in the lower right hand quadrant of the
photo are actually walkways that are being set up. A few hours later,
the square was full of water and the walkways were full of tourists going
nowhere fast.
06) CITY | Same
shot - slightly different angle. The red brick structure is the base of
the bell tower.
07) VENICE | Is
was about this time that I bought an umbrella. I carried it with me for
the remainder of my travels. I actually used it once more in Sicily.
08) VENICE | Looking
across the lagoon toward Palladio's Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore.
09) VENICE | At
the top of the bell tower overlooking the Piazza San Marco. The Piazzetta
di San Marco (photos 3-6) adjoins it perpendicularly from the left (just
off frame). My hotel is somewhere in the upper right.
