I arrived
in Taormina's train station around 3:30 am. The train station is actually
on the coast, about 2 miles from the town - which is on a hilltop. I waited
around until the first bus came by at 7am.
|
01) TAORMINA | One
of the nicest places in Taormina is/are the public gardens of the
Villa Comunale Duca Colnnadi Cesariò. Victorian follies (backdrop-like
buildings) are sited within the gardens. |
|
|
02) TAORMINA | In
the lower right corner, you can see part of one of the bird cages.
The buildings are populated solely by brids ... and cats. |
|
03) TAORMINA | In
fact, cats were everywhere in the garden. Though you don't see any in
this shot, they were there lurking in the shrubs, sleeping in the shadows,
or climbing in the trees.
04) TAORMINA | The
Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca is partially built into the cliff-face.
The ruins of a medieval castle adorn the summit of the hill.
05) TAORMINA | Looking
down over the town.
06) TAORMINA | A
zoom shot of the Teatro Greco. Orginally it was a Greek theatre, but it
was later completely rebuilt by the Romans and used for gladiator combats.
|
07) TAORMINA | The
Teatro Greco was the home of the "chorus" in Woody Allen's
film MIGHTY APHRODITE. One of the first glimpses of it in the film
is a shot very much like this one. |
|
08) TAORMINA | The
"stage."
09) TAORMINA | Looking
up toward the Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca and above it, the medieval
fortress.
10) TAORMINA | View
of the town from the Teatro Greco.
11) TAORMINA | Most
of the upper passage way has fallen down or been quarried for other uses.
12) TAORMINA | View
from the nosebleed section.
13) TAORMINA | A
postcard. This is what it would have looked like, had Mt. Etna been visible
(it would have even been smoldering like this).
