My only disappointment
with Taormina, was that I had really wanted to take a bus tour to the
top of Etna, but they only run Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I was
simply too late and I couldn't wait around for Monday to come as I had
to continue on to Trapani in order to catch the ferry to Tunisia (it only
runs on Mondays).
01) CATANIA | Because
I missed the first train from Taormina to Catania (by only minutes) I
had to catch the second and then make do with a 4 hour "layover"
in Catania while I waited for the next train to Palermo. I checked my
bags and walked out of the train station and found Etna towering over
the city. The black stuff at the summit is ash. As I type this (August/September
2001), Etna is spewing hot, motlen MAG-MA from newly created vents on
it's flanks. I would have liked to have seen that!
02) SICILY | The
large sheild of Etna as seen from the train to Palermo.
03) STROMBOLI | Another
postcard. I didn't make it out to this tiny island northeast of Sicily,
but this page is short on pictures, so... Stromboli is one of the most
active volcanoes in the world. I erupts almost daily. In fact, on the
eruptive scale, volcanoes that erupt this much are called "Strombolian."
Note the little village. No fear.
04) VULCANO| Yet
another postcard of yet another small island northeast of Sicily that
I didn't get to see. Again, note the little village right next to the
main cone.
I crossed
Sicily by train and reached Palermo around 5pm. I continued on to and
arrived in the town of Trapani, on the western tip of the island, around
7 pm.
