I spent the
morning on the train from Rome to Naples. I arrived in Naples around noon
and attempted to venture into the station's McDonald's, but was intimidated
by the relentless Police presence. Instead, I got back on the train and
made the 25 minute trip back north to the town of Caserta.
01) CASERTA : PALAZZO REALE | The
building dwarfs the town. Look near the right end of the facade to find
a car. This will give you a sense of scale.
02) CASERTA : PALAZZO REALE | One
enters into an arcade that bisects the building leaving a courtyard on
each side.
03) CASERTA : PALAZZO REALE | On
the other side, it continues on as a path through the gardens.
|
04) CASERTA : PALAZZO REALE | The
path terminates about a mile and a half out. The waterfall that cascades
down is the longest free-flowing man-made waterfall in the world. |
|
05) CASERTA : PALAZZO REALE | Back
insde the arcade there is a stairway.
|
06) CASERTA : PALAZZO REALE | Lions
guard the landing. |
|
07) CASERTA : PALAZZO REALE | Turning
around, this is what we have. Look familiar?

INT.
THEED - PALACE THRONE ROOM - DAY
QUEEN AMIDALA, SIO BIBBLE, and FIVE OF HER HANDMAIDENS (EIRTAE,
YANE, PADME, RABE, SACHE) are surrounded by TWENTY DROIDS. CAPTAIN
PANAKA and FOUR NABOO GUARDS are also held at gunpoint. NUTE and
RUNE stand in the middle of the room.
BIBBLE:
...how will you explain this invasion to the Senate?
NUTE: The Naboo and the Federation will forge a treaty that
will legitimize our occupation here. I've been assured it will be
ratified by the Senate.
AMIDALA:
I will not co-operate.
NUTE:
Now, now, your Highness. You are not going to like what we have
in store for your people. In time, their suffering will persuade
you to see our point of view. Commander. (OOM-9 steps forward)
Process them.
OOM-9:
Yes, sir! (turns to his sergeant) Take them to Camp Four.
The
SERGEANT marches the GROUP out of the throne room.

view from the top of the stairs. Incidentally, if you're sharp, you
can see the back ends of the lions in THE PHANTOM MENACE. |

NABOO PALACE - THRONE ROOM - THEED - NIGHT
NUTE
and RUNE stand before a hologram of DARTH SIDIOUS.
DARTH
SIDIOUS: Viceroy, is the planet secure?
NUTE: Yes, my Lord, we have taken over the last pockets of
primitive life forms. We are in complete control of the planet now.
DARTH SIDIOUS: Good. I will see to it that in the Senate,
things stay as they are. I am sending Darth Maul to join you. He
will deal with the Jedi.
NUTE: Yes, my Lord.
DARTH
SIDIOUS fades off.
RUNE:
A Sith lord here with us?!!

09) CASERTA : PALAZZO REALE | The figures
in the preceding photo were standing a few steps down on the inlaid circle
in the floor. Note the statues visible in the background of both shots.
The guy at the right is a wedding photographer and was setting up to take
portraits of several "just wed" couples.

NUTE:
...we've sent out patrols. We've already located their starship
in the swamp....It won't be long, My Lord.
DARTH
SIDIOUS: This is an unexpected move for her. It's too aggresive...Lord
Maul, be mindful.
DARTH
MAUL: Yes, my Master.
DARTH
SIDIOUS: Be patient... Let them make the first move.

10) CASERTA : PALAZZO REALE | Same
spot - October 2001. Most of the scenes from the film that were shot in
Caserta were filmed in this room. [update 2008: A shot of Tom Cruise's
character crossing this room features in Mission Impossible III.]

12) NAPLES WITH VESUVIOUS IN THE BACKGROUND | Looks
beautiful doesn't it? It wasn't. Naples was very "third world"
with slum-like conditions all around. I was afraid to have my camera out,
so I didn't take any photos within the city. This photo comes from a postcard.
