I awoke to
my final day in Africa with two goals: get the car cleaned and find my
plane.
01) LA MARSA | This
was the view from my hotel room. That's the Mediterrainean in the distance.
The brown sludge you see above it is what I like to call "polluted
haze."
02) LA MARSA | My
hotel's patio.
03) LA MARSA | Thank
you VISA.
04) LA MARSA | This
is the front yard. All the globes and tree trunks are lit up at night
(like Christmas in summer). It was very pretty, yet I was very tired and
sick, so I didn't manage to get a night photo.
05) SIDI BOU SAID | A
postcard. I had hoped to stay in this little upper class suburb of Tunis,
but there was only one non-luxury hotel and they only had a triple room
left (for a triple's price). I ended up paying just as much for a single
room in neighboring La Marsa - but it was nicer!
I did succeed
in getting the car cleaned. It was one big mudball - inside and out. But
the local service station cleaned it thoroughly and even filled
the errant tire for just five Dinars (about $2.50). It was a much better
job that any car wash in America could do. I suspect they've
had a lot of practice!
I also managed
to find the airport and was very impressed with the guy from Hertz who
helped me with my heavy bags. He got me a baggage cart (which saved my
physical being enormously!) and even directed me to the check-in counter.
Within a
few hours, I was back in Rome and searching (again) for a hotel. The Delta
counter is only staffed in the mornings and their partner Air France,
could only take me to Paris (deja vu!) so my plan on returning home a
day early gave way to finding a hotel. After failing to find the Hilton
(which is right there!), I booked a local place through the tourist agency.
A van came and got me (with others) and drove us a few miles to the Hotel
Cancelli Rossi - the Roman equivilant of a Holiday Inn - near the airport.
I was about 45 minutes outside of Rome's downtown, so my evening consisited
of a hot shower (needed!), a nice dinner (fish!), and an hour or so of
Italian MTV in my room (baffling!).
