During the filming of the Mos Espa scenes in the spring of 1997 two German journalists from the film magazine "Cinema" hired a hot air balloon and flew across the site. This is the map they constructed from their Indiana Jones-style aerial reconnaissance.

Mos Espa location map
Key:

1. Dummy entrance area sub-development (probably to the home of Anakin)
2. Transporters for water and food
3. The main set
4. A space junkyard
5. Tents for the crew
6. A tribune for close-ups - where the pod-race audience will cheer from!
7. Another junkyard with a crane for trick-shootings.

(Note: these comments are the views of "Cinema" not Tataouine Tours.)

What the buildings really are:

1. Podrace viewing platform
2. Transporters for water and food
3. The main set
4. Watto's junkyard
5. Costume tents
6. Bleachers/terraces for podrace crowd
7. Elevated camera for podracers

Many of the features, particularly the tents, the terraced seating and the crane will not have been left at the site. The plaster and wood village is still there however.

The French balloon hire company, AerOasis, can be found in Tozeur opposite the Hôtel Continental on Avenue Abdulkacem Chebbi. Alternatively telephone (Tozeur) 452361. The cost for balloon hire is roughly 80 Tunisian Dinar per hour.
