On our second visit we identified the area where the Roman encampment was built. Although extended in the film by computer graphic additions, several tents were erected on the high plateau overlooking the battlefield.

The area now is flat and empty save for a few areas of vegetation.

The only clue for this shot was the silver birch trunks visible behind Maximus. Fortunately we found that there were only a very few birches around, and they were confined to one spot. We still had difficulty matching the angle, until finally by carefully pulling aside some young firs we managed to get the shot.

A nice potential confirmation of our findings was the presence of some old hay bales just about where the horses were.
