Our walk had taken us in almost a complete circuit of the main clearing. We realised that the next scenes took place back where we had arrived.

When Commodus rides to join his father at the battlefield, he approaches along the same road as we had, and steers his horse up a steep short-cut to the crest of the hill, from where he can look down and see the aftermath of the battle.

Although hard to see, this is the same view showing the winding road and the little track. Trees on the left can be matched to those in the film.

The subsequent closeup shows the far horizon. We were surprised at how little the treeline apears to have changed.
