Turning now to our left, we were able to look west and see the entire field of battle from the perspective of the Roman infantry.

Legionnaires watch as the barbarian horde emerges from the treeline opposite.

The place occupied by the soldiers is now covered with ferns, but the bridleway crossing the picture shows where the front line stood. Across the field a small 'v'-shaped valley is visible between two hills. This particular contour is not really visible in the film until a later shot when the trees are already ablaze (below).
